A hundred years ago today, the Austria-Hungry Dual Monarchy declared war on Serbia. Within the week the world was at war and was never to be the same again. Conflicts that are happening today are linked to a declaration of war that most though would be a minor conflict contained to the Balkans.
Was it possible to stop the road to war between the shooting of the Archduke on 28th June and the declaration of war a month latter? While I have always thought so, my listening to the podcast When Diplomacy Fails I find Europe went out of its way by doing nothing.
